we have come to a point where i think we need to acknowledge that social media moderation as a concept is completely broken - rules are created by well meaning people for good reasons, but because of the infeasibility of human moderators actually giving each of these cases due diligence and making a decision that is widely agreed with, it’s largely just automated. it comes down to whoever hits the report button more and when. with social media as a whole being fractured into all of these individual corporate entities with no cohesive unifying operating procedures, there is probably no good solution to this other than moving away from social media platforms and focusing on smaller self-contained / community run online groups.
we’re probably already seeing this happening with the massive popularity of discord communities while social media companies flounder and shrivel up around us. as a matter of fact we have already seen this happen for most of the internet’s existence - they were called “Forums”. it’s pretty obvious that social media was only really good at facilitating the creation of these pockets of community anyways, but the nature of social media as a “platform” that must be as profitable as possible only ever forced these social clusters together in a way that drove engagement via arguments.
as hard as it is to imagine for people who grew up in a world where the default state of being online was competing for massive attention in full view of the entire public on these massive platforms, it’s probably going to be looked back on as a short-lived and failed experiment.

I got terminated on predstrogen due to mass false reports about sexually explicit content, I had evidence of these mass false reports, and when I asked support for help they stated “As you know, you posted sexually explicit content and additionally harrassed people”
My issue isn’t with the account termination, it’s the double standard around it
I’ve had multiple accounts. The first (madhopz) was terminated for content on sideblogs when I was doing sex work and I know I won’t get it back. The second (sadhopz) was targetted by lolcow forums, and took half a year to get back, only once I humiliated myself to support by screenshotting and documenting what they were saying about me and sharing images of me. The third (predstrogen) I mentioned and I’ll get back to, but I was never emailed to explain why the fourth (Avewy/Predesterone) was terminated. All we know is that it was right after the CEO got upset with me, I broke no rules and said no one should attack anyone, I posted no explicit content, none.
A man twice my age and worth $400,000,000 threatened to call the cops on a trans woman online, and then deleted me when I mentioned this
To add insult to injury, he refused to call me “she” the entire time, referring to me as “they” and backpedalling to vaguely refer to me as The Account. I’m a fucking person, and you know that by threatening to pin the cops on me. Eventually even slipping and calling me “it” before respecting the womanhood of the person he would gladly talk about and “make an exception for”
My complaint to his post was that he says I was banned for harrassment, which is a lie. I was banned for mass false reports of sexual content, despite having been told by staff directly a month prior that my blog does not break that rule, and have had people admit to collaborating on reports. But my biggest issue is that even if I was banned for harrassment, then what did they do about my own harrassment?

After the ban on Predstrogen and I moved to Avewy, they were everywhere. Inbox messages claiming I was sending asks to children threatening to rape them, anonymous people stating they’re our victim and are scared to speak out about what I did to them. It all only happened now. They’ve turned a blind eye and given these people a win. I saved it all in an #archive tag as proof if I was ever asked or got through to support, but that didn’t happen when i was terminated without warning or reason
When Matt deleted me himself, he deleted everything I posted and saved as evidence for my situation. Anonymous asks slandering me, reblogs of people organising to get rid of me, my own documentation of what staff did, all of it was deleted with @avewy/@predesterone.

Cali & I were all ready to start working seriously on the Untitled Cow Farm Game before twitter imploded, then Unity imploded, and when she decided to shift to doing Femboy Factory instead, tumblr starts imploding, the one place it has any following at all.

A few months ago, Andre Brock, who is one of the leading scholars on the culture of Black Twitter, spoke in one of my classes. I asked him if, in the wake of the many recent terrible changes to the platform, the community of Black Twitter was likely to move wholesale to another platform, or if the phenomenon that is Black Twitter would develop on Mastodon or BlueSky in the same way that it did on Twitter. His response was that he thought it was very unlikely. The community of Black Twitter developed organically over time, and is the result of the unique conditions of the internet and platforms when it first developed, and there is too much history and connection in place entrenched where it is to be moved wholesale or to be rebuilt somewhere else. The existence of these unique online communities is one of the things keeping people on Twitter as it sinks, and if and when it eventually goes under permanently, those communities will go with it. There may be other communities of a similar kind on other sites, but none will have the unique culture and history that Black Twitter, or game dev Twitter, or whatever other Twitter had.

For those who don’t remember, here’s the lawsuit two years ago where Tumblr (or specifically Automattic) settled with the New York City Commission on Human Rights regarding Tumblr’s terribly implemented porn ban targeting LGBTQ folk more than it should. Here’s an excerpt detailing what the NYCCHR ordered Tumblr to do:
The settlement gives Tumblr 180 days to hire an expert on sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) issues and provide related training to moderators. It must also hire someone with experience in this area as well as expertise in image classification, who will review Tumblr’s moderation algorithms to see if they’re more likely to flag LGBTQ content. As part of an overall review, Tumblr will reexamine 3,000 old cases where a user successfully appealed a takedown, looking for patterns that could indicate bias.

Tumblr has already proven it cannotuphold it’s responsibilities under the EU Data Services Act (DSA). Failure to adequately moderate their site, including with regards to competently handling both bans and user complaints, is a direct and continuous violation of the DSA.
Under the DSA, EU users have a right to complain to the service (i.e. Tumblr). They should do this first and without delay.
Some examples of violations that you should report include:
lack of transparency (this includes lying about ToS violations, by the way) about bans and removed content
lack of appropriate redress following bans and removed content (unfairly banned for life with no chance of reinstatement? you should file a complaint)
illegal content (I point you to the CEO’s multiplatform campaign of harassment, and invite you to complain to Twitter too - they have even stricter obligations as a larger company)
failure to address user complaints (have you registered a complained to Tumblr about the above, or about harassment you’ve received, or about any other valid matter in the past 6 months? has nothing been done? that’s an actionable DSA violation; see below)
If EU users do not believe their complaint to the service provider has been adequately resolved,they have the right to report DSA violations to their relevant authority.

here is the list of where to go to report DSA violations for each EU member state. it took me a while to find, possibly because the policy only fairly recently went into effect.
note that the DSA only went into effect on 17 february 2024 for all websites save a small handful of the absolute largest ones (which tumblr doesn’t fall under). I’m not sure whether the european commission can or will act on violations that happened before that date, but everything that happened after the 17th (including the horrible way they treated avery) absolutely can and should be reported

Oh make no mistake this is me grinding my teeth and spitting about how DELIGHTED I would be to be PEOVED wrong. But I’m not exactly holding out hope here.
All people have a tendency to be unconsciously biased toward seeing trans women as untrustworthy, unsafe, lacking vulnerability, the problem to be solved rather than a person to be taken care of. And this is not less true in trans and queer and feminist communities. It’s just more unconscious, and more propped up with social justice, feminism, queer lib, leftist, and anti-oppression beliefs. This book is talking about this in context to a physical public situation of harassment, but this is true of social conflicts too, including on social media, in friend groups, in all kinds of situations. The unconscious bias also gets taken advantage of by people who know what they’re doing and hide behind that bias to make their mistreatment of transfems seem reasonable—again, often supported with social justice and anti-oppression rhetoric. TERFs aren’t the only people who do this! It felt so incredible to see this spelled out in print, plain as day, an actual book calling out a real thing I’ve experience more times than I can count, that all transfems I know go through, and that I still feel crazy for seeing because there’s so much gaslighting about it. You know how when you KNOW something is real, but you feel defensive about that knowledge, like you have to be ready to hold onto it, and then you see something confirming that knowledge for you in no uncertain terms and it feels like “wow maybe I wasn’t crazy all this time!” That’s how I felt seeing this.

I learned to hate myself for being transgender before I knew I was transgender. I laughed at the jokes in stand up comedy routines, and prime time sitcoms, and animated comedy shows, and in the movies, and in books, and in games, laughing at trans women for existing, about “men in dresses”, about people who “got their dicks chopped off”, and I learned to think that was worthy of ridicule.
And then a day came when I felt a pang of envy at what my female classmates were wearing and I repressed it, and felt guilty, and a day where I felt incomplete because I had no breasts and I repressed it and I felt disgusting And a day when I realized the only images of romance that made me feel anything showed two women together and I repressed it and I felt like a monster And a day when I realized I felt sick when I looked at myself in the mirror after every shower before work and couldn’t bear to look at my own face, and I hated myself. And then there came a day when I hated myself so much, and I thought I could never understand why, and so I just wanted it all to end. And it was just a miracle that I swerved my car back into my lane in time.
And all of it started with a joke that I heard on TV, and then kept hearing from all the voices from the ether, over and over and over, worming an idea into my mind before I was old enough to realize I was absorbing it, the idea that a man in a dress is funny, and that changing your body parts makes you a freak, and that women who have penises instead of vaginas are liars and hurt men. His take on it is certainly the most recognisable owing to it having been taken up by fantasy roleplaying games, but fantasy literature using fantastical species as an explicit proxy for race in the modern sense pre-dates Tolkien’s literary success by at least several decades.
I’m saying this not to exonerate Tolkien, but to point out that the fact that your fantasy setting isn’t doing the standard elf/dwarf/hobbit/orc shit doesn’t automatically let it off the hook. There’s a long history of species-as-proxy-for-race in fantasy fiction both before, after, and entirely apart from the Tolkienesque strand that needs to be reckoned with, and if your thought process stops at “well, I’m not literally imitating Tolkien, so it’s fine”, you’re gonna miss some implications.

in 1982 reagan stopped the israeli invasion of lebanon with one phone call. in 2023, israeli military officials admitted they could not continue for more than a few days without american military aid. in 2024, biden commemorated 100 days of a war where over 100 palestinian children had been killed every single day without mentioning these children once. now imagine him doing this if israeli bombs had been killing 100 american children per day and you were watching their parents and siblings gather up their remains from the rubble with their bare hands in plastic bags to bury them. every day for a hundred days, new bags full of bits of small children who were once loved, dressed carefully, their hair brushed, children who spent the past few weeks drinking dirty water and sleeping in cold tents.
his re-election would not even be a matter of conversation, regardless of whether or not trump is worse. it would be completely unacceptable. the party would’ve been forced to choose another candidate. but of course 11,000 palestinian children (who are just at the mercy of your votes as american children are) do not warrant even a moment of shame before berating people to vote blue while there is an ongoing genocide trial at the hague. if you really want to engage politics seriously, you would be directing your ire at your administration first and foremost, not trying to sweep it under the rug for elections. you would be threatening to withhold your vote until a ceasefire. you would be making this a key issue for his re-election. you would be too horrified to contemplate asking people to vote for a lesser evil when it is so much evil. we know trump is worse. but unfortunately this genocide didn’t happen under trump. refusing to confront that is going to get you nowhere.

Hi sharkey is a fedi server that is compatible with mastodon so you can see mastodon posts there and interact normally. It has a lot of quality of life features that I find cool, and it’s what the instance I’m on is running instead of mastodon or mastodon server forks like glitch.

I’m still extremely upset for multiple reasons, I feel like the safe haven for a lot of young transfems in which they were able to express their sexuality freely without being judged has been destroyed. It was one of the only reasons I came here was seeing how positive everyone was with kink and the like. I feel horrible as I watch the community we all put together die out as a ceo plummets this place to the ground. there were so many friendships I made here… it’s genuinely sad and I’m having to hold back tears at work reading people in my inbox plead and cry for me to stay because they’re scared, alone and find comfort in being around me.
It’s easy for people to disconnect the emotions and downplay by saying shit like “people online aren’t your friends” but it’s like yes yes they are, i have told people online my deepest darkests of secrets and consider certain people I met through the internet online as family. Yes there’s bad people on here but you can still make genuine connections with people, and people love to shun that. It’s easy to write it off as “just a blog get over yourself” without realizing people have had a decade of their online history erased without warning simply bc matt can’t take criticism. all those friends, all those interactions, all the things like funny posts that make people laugh when they’re down - gone. I enjoy interacting with people, I enjoy seeing people reblog comment and interact with me. I enjoy being someone that people can look up to and reach out when they’re having a bad day. To completely gloss over that is just a way of dehumanizing us.
